Orienteering Skills Workshop at West Point's Lake Frederick.

The United States Military Academy Orienteering Team will host a weekend workshop in order to teach the fundamentals of Orienteering. This workshop can be used by scouts to complete the majority of the Orienteering Merit Badge requirements. The team will have on site a certified Orienteering Merit Badge Counselor who can sign off on completed requirements. The remaining requirements can be completed within the troop after 29 SEP and signed off by our counselor at a later date. Upon finishing the clinic, scouts will have completed tasks 1-7 of the Merit Badge requirements while getting experience on white, yellow, and orange level courses. This weekend is sure to be exciting for all participating. All questions and comments can be sent to the Cadet in Charge (CIC), CDT Mark McCormick at mark.mccormick@usma.edu or the Officer in Charge (OIC), COL Mike Hendricks.  We encourage any and all questions pertaining to the weekend's activities, and will continue to update the website with information.


Registration &  Camping Costs:

Registration forms attached in this email need to be filled out and returned to CDT McCormick no later than 1 September, but we request scout leaders to send an email as early as possible to confirm their troops attendance and approximate numbers. This will help us in selecting cadets that will lead the instruction.  Registration fees will be collected on Friday 27 September upon arrival as cash or check.


Registration funds will help cover the cost of the Lake Fredrick Complex, which includes a mess hall, bathhouse, boats, beach, picnic sites and volleyball/horseshoe areas.

Camping is a separate expense. Each troop must coordinate through West Point’s MWR Office at Round Pond by calling 845-938-2503 (8am – 6pm daily). Payment in full is required at the time of the reservation.  Be sure to tell MWR that you are registering as a participant of the West Point Orienteering Team’s Boy Scout event

  Tent Sites  $25 per night (Maximum occupancy: 25 people per site)
Scout A-Frames“ $35 per night (7 A-Frames, Maximum occupancy: 15 people)
A-frame cabins contain  army bunk beds, limited 110-volt receptacles inside and 30 amp RV   plug outside, outdoor grill and two picnic tables.
