The Boy Scouts of America have created a new position for young adults that wish to remain on their Troop rosters, without registering as Assistant Scoutmasters.
The only training requirement is Youth Protection, College Scouter Reservists do not need to take Scout Leader Specific training or any other adult leader trainings to be considered as trained for their position.
As we prepare for 2012 rechartering, please consider using the College Scouter Reserve classification for young men in your Troop, some of whom may be currently registered as Assistant Scoutmasters.
If the young man is away at college for most of the Scouting year, and can only participate with the Troop on holidays or during summer vacation, the College Scouter Reserve would be the appropriate method of maintaining their registration with the Boy Scouts.
However, if the young man continues to be highly active with the Troop (attending at least 1 or 2 meetings per month and participating in several camping trips or other activities during the course of the Scouting program year), than registering him as an Assistant Scoutmaster may be more appropriate. In that case, he should be encouraged to take both Scout Leader Specific and Outdoor Leader trainings.
