The Role of the Parent/Guardian

Congratulations on your Scout earning the rank of Life Scout. As volunteers and Scout mentors, we know that it took a lot of support over the years to have your Scout reach this place.

This last rank is one where your Scout is very much in charge. Encourage and guide, but it is up to your Scout’s motivation and leadership to earn the rank of Eagle Scout.

As you begin the process, please take a moment to read the Message to Scouts and Parents or Guardians in the Eagle Scout Service Project Workbook.

We recommend that you encourage your Scout to stay active with the troop or crew, and for you to be active with your Scout. Share your Scout’s experiences with others, listen, and be the sounding board and cheerleader your Scout will need. Work with your Scout to encourage goal setting and time management in completing the Life to Eagle process. As a best practice, your Scout should choose a project that interests him or her. A project the Scout is passionate about is the easiest to complete.

Remember, it is the Scout’s project. Provide support when appropriate, like transportation, photo documentation and energy. It is the responsibility of the Scout to fill out the project paperwork, not the parents.
